As a domain name owner you are required to provide contact information
- so that other Internet users can contact you if needed. This information is often referred to as the WHOIS information.
Unfortunately this information is regularly abused... Used to send unsolicited emails (spam);
Can be used negatively by competitors; Be the source of details for third parties to
invade your privacy - or in extreme cases aid Identity theft (On or
Off-line).
The good news is that protection against abuses is at hand:-
Methods differ depending on the type of domain...
UK Domains (.co.uk, .org.uk etc.)
(Note that .uk.com, uk.net, gb.com, gb.net & eu.com are
administered by 'CentralNIC' and are not UK based names in this context.)
Nominet who administer UK domain names, allow you to 'Opt-Out':
You'll find this FREE 'Opt-out-of-WhoIs' facility in your Domain Control
Panel.
European Name (.eu) (not .fr, .de,
.be etc.)
European registrations with Eurid.eu are protected against mass harvesting
via their visual (machine unreadable) code entry system. So, opting
out is not necessary.
American / International Domains (.com, .net,
.org, .biz, .info etc.)
There is no 'opt-out' policy for these, however, via our
associates, we offer a privacy interface which complies with the
disclosure rules whilst keeping your details from publication or automated
searches.
Your Name, Address and other Sensitive information can still be requested,
but, via the security system, you'll receive the request and can answer it
or not - depending on whether it's official; for valid and reasonable
purposes - or if not, then whether you're inclined.
The facility provides a 'Generic' response to 'Who Is' searches, showing
Domain Name Owner, Address & Contact as 'Identity Secured', and
associated Domain / IP addresses as 'identity-secured.com'.
